Apartheid
South Africa used to have a system called apartheid, where people were treated unfairly because of their race. This started a long time ago when some Dutch settlers came to South Africa and took over the land. They made rules that said non-white people had to live separately from white people and didn't have the same rights. This lasted for many years until 1994, when the country had its first fair elections and apartheid was finally ended.

Nelson Mandela was a leader from South Africa who worked to make things fair for everyone. In South Africa, there used to be a system that treated people differently because of their skin color, and Mandela wanted to change that. He was put in jail for a long time because of his work, but eventually he became the first black president of South Africa. People think he was really brave and did a lot to make things better for everyone.
