1. Talk about an action that happened in the past.
2. When we're interested in when the action happened.
3. Talk about experiences that happened over a time in the past (and are finished now)

We use the present perfect to: 
1. Talk about an action that finished in the past, but the result is important now. (Not important when it happened)
My brother is happy (result) because he has won a competition.
2. With ever/never -> experiences until now 
3. With just/already/yet -> things we have(n't) done recently
4. Action that started in the past and continues now (for/since)
