A comparison between two things that are seemingly unrelated:
'you are my sunshine'
A comparison between two things with 'like' or 'as':
'you're as cold as ice'

Exaggeration for emphasis or effect:
                                                                                                                                            ' I would walk 500 miles, and I would walk 500 more, just to be the man who walked 1,000 miles to fall down at your door.
