If giraffes were round instead of skinny and tall, what could/couldn't they do?

That is a conditional

It consists of a condition (voorwaarde) and a result) 

If... then...

There are 4 different kinds, we will only look at 2.

the zero conditional

> used with general facts and truths

If you heat up ice, it melts.

If you don't eat, you get hungry

How to make the zero conditional

For both sentence parts (the condition and the result) 

you use the present simple.

(to get up - to miss) If I get up late, I miss the bus.

(to break - to hurt)  When you break your leg, it hurts. 

The first conditional

> used when a situation is possible or likely to happen

If I see him tonight, I will talk to him. 

  If you break your leg, I will come to see you. 

How to make the first conditional

For  the conditional part > present simple (the stem/infinitive) 

For the result part > future simple ( will + stem/infinitive) 

(to rain - to go) If it rains, I will not go to the beach.

(to cry - to cheer up) If you cry, I will cheer you up.
