Holocaust?

Wat gaan we deze lessen doen?

-We are going to look at how the persecution of Jews was organized in the Netherlands.

-We are going to learn to recognize the 10 stages of genocide (genocide).

-We are going to learn to extract information from photographs.

-We are going to learn to look critically at photographs.

Classification

The first step in the process of genocide.

Jews are a part of Dutch society. 

Hate propaganda organizes Jew- hatred.

Jews begin to lose contact with society as a result.

"WE" versus 'them' : prejudice

Polarisation

- Prejudice is succeeded by discriminatory laws.

Pretty soon after the German occupation, anti-Jewish measures are introduced.

For Jews a normal life becomes more and more difficult, they were fired, all kinds of prohibitions for Jews.

Jews and non-Jews come face to face.

Symbolisation

- From May 1942, Jews aged 6 and older must wear a star.

Now it is visible who is Jewish and who is not.

Jews are thus further excluded.

Organisation

Persecution of Jews is conceived, prepared and carried out by people.

Wannsee Conference: "Endlösung der Judenfrage"  or 

"Final solution to the Jewish Problem"

The Germans are aided by Dutch collaborators.

Discrimination

Everyone with one or more Jewish grandparents is Jewish, even if you don't feel it (anymore).

Freedom resticted by discriminatory laws.

Dehumanisation

Jews are seen as inferior.

All possessions are looted.

Contacts with non-Jews are forbidden.

Entertainment or sports are forbidden to Jews.

By no longer seeing Jews as human beings, it is easier to kill them.

Preparation

Jews live separately from non-Jews.

In Amsterdam, Jews are imprisoned in the Hollandse schouwburg before being deported to Westerbork.

Prosecution

Genocide is aimed at destroying an entire population group.

Children , the elderly and the disabled are also included in this persecution.

Systematic extermination

All the previous steps eventually lead to murder.

In July 1942, the systematic murder of Dutch Jews in concentration and killing camps begins.

Upon arrival, most Dutch Jews are murdered immediately; others have to work themselves to death.

Only about 10% of the Dutch Jews survive.

Denial

To this day there are those who deny (= punishable) the Holocaust.

During the war, the perpetrators were already trying to cover their tracks.

Therefore, many survivors see it as their duty to tell their story.
