Symbolism
In literature, symbolism is the use of a concrete image to represent an abstract idea.

How to find it:
You can recognize symbolism when an image in a piece of text seems to indicate something other than its literal meaning. It might be repeated or seem somewhat jarring, as if the author is intentionally pointing it out (and they might be—though authors don’t always do this).

Slide 25 - Diapositive

Examples
Color:
red > angry, jealousy,
Animals:
> Butterfly = transformation
> Lion = royalty, strength
Common objects:
Apple = temptation
Chains = imprisonment

Slide 27 - Diapositive

Writers use both similes
and metaphors
to paint a literary picture,
evoke emotions,
and make text more descriptive.
