What do you already know about future tense?

What is Future Tense?

Future tense is a verb form used to talk about actions or events that will happen after the present moment.

Forming Future Tense

In English, the future tense is often formed :

- using the auxiliary verb 'will' 

- followed by the base form of the main verb.

Examples of Future Tense

I will visit my grandparents tomorrow. 

She will study for her exams next week.

Time Expressions

Time expressions such as:

'tomorrow', 

'next month', and

 'in the future' 

are often used with the future tense.

Question Formation

To form questions in future tense, 

invert (omkeren) the subject and the auxiliary verb 'will'.

Negative Sentences

To form negative sentences in future tense, 

add 'not' after the auxiliary verb 'will'.

– for scheduled events

The plane to Sydney leaves at 5pm.

2. Present Continuous:

– for arrangements in the near future

– of which the location and/or time are certain

They are flying to Sydney tomorrow.

3. To be going to:

– for plans

– for predictions based on proof

Are they going to move house soon?

Look at those dark clouds. It is definitely going to rain.

Will:

– for promises

– for decisions

– for predictions for which there is no proof

Noah promises he will stay over tonight.

My father will retire next year.

We will win the lottery this year, for sure!
