four different types of past tenses
- past simple (I worked) 
- past continuous ( I was walking)
- past perfect (I had worked) 
- past perfect continuous ( I had been working)

past simple 
- the past tense is formed by adding –ed: (called,liked,wanted)
-  verb irregulare 
- when do we use the past simple? 
- once in the past
- true for some time in the past

past continous 
-  the past tense of the verb be (was/were) + verb + ing 
- happened before and after another action
- happened before and after a specific time
- continued for some time
-  happened again and again

past perfect 
- The past perfect is made from the verb had + the past participle of a verb. 
-  
- started in the past and continued up to a given time in the past
-  happened several times before a point in the past and continued after that point
- reporting our experience up to a point in the past
- happened in the past and is important at a later time in the past

- had been + verb + -ing 
-  something that began in the past, continued in the past, and also ended at a defined point in the past.
example:
He had been drinking milk out the carton when Mom walked into the kitchen.
