&
2. Speaking & Stones

Slide 25 - Diapositive

Part 1: -or sound

Slide 26 - Diapositive

Explanation (1)
Words that have the same vowels and vowel combinations are not always pronounced in the same way.

For example: ‘door’ and ‘book’.

Slide 27 - Diapositive

Explanation (2)
Some words can also be spelt completely different, but they are pronounced the same.

For example:
  • Bored
  • Board

Slide 28 - Diapositive

Explanation (3)
The English [or]-sound is similar to the Dutch vowel sound at the beginning of the word ‘oor’.

The sound can be spelt in the following ways:
  • War
  • For
  • Poor
  • Core
  • Ought
  • Taught
  • Paw

Slide 29 - Diapositive

But watch out: In formal British English the ‘r’ often is silent, unless it is followed by a vowel.
