Writing task:
Respond to the following quote, writing from the point of view of Kimberly’s mother. Write for 10-15 minutes without stopping and without caring too much about grammar or spelling, this is about getting ideas on paper!
“But most things hadn’t changed, they’d simply become routine. I grew into the space that Ma’s foreignness left vacant. She hadn’t learned anymore English, so I took over everything that required any kind of interaction with the world outside of Chinatown.” (page 155)
Questions to help get you started: How would Ma describe her own position? How does she see her life in New York / Chinatown? If Kimberly has grown into her space, does Ma feel like she has shrunk?
