Look at the clock

First, you need to cut the clock in half.

For the right side of the clock, we say past

For the left side of the clock, we say to

12:10 ->  ten past twelve

11:50 -> ten to twelve

Look at the clock

We only use o'clock for full hours: 12:00 -> twelve o'clock

12:30 -> half past twelve

Look at the clock

In English, we count the minutes, so:

12:20 ->  twenty past twelve

12:25 -> twenty-five past twelve

11:35 -> twenty-five to twelve

11:40 -> twenty to twelve
