Theme words

A terrible holiday

• Take out your laptop & share your terrible holiday story with the person next to you. For the person listening: Can you hear the Stone sentences and understand the story? 

Time: 1 minute. 

Finished: two people share their story with the class. 

Didn't do it? Shame on you. Come to H118 at 15.15 to finish it. 

Asking questions in the past

What questions do you hear? Write them down on page 72. 

Questions in the past. 

• When something happened in the past you use the past simple. 

I ......... in Wales this summer. (to be). 

I .......... on a mountain. (to hike). 

Questions in the past. 

• For questions there are 3 rules:

1. You put was, were and could at the beginning of the question. 

Mirjam was ill this weekend. --> Was Mirjam ill this weekend?

We were at the festival last week. --> Were you at the festival last week? 

2. Other verb? add did to the beginning, followed by the verb (without to).

You listened to me. --> Did you listen to me? 

I made notes. --> Did you make notes? 

3. Asking a question with when, how, where, what or why? Put the wh-word at the beginning + was/were/could or did + verb. 

Negative sentences in the past

• For negative sentences there are two rules: 

1. Was, were or could? Add -n't or not to the verb. 

Mirjam was not ill this weekend. 

We weren't at the festival this weekend. 

2. Other verbs? Add didn't + whole verb - to. 

You made notes. --> You didn't make notes. 

Do it yourself

• Do exercise 52 and 53 on page 69 and 70. 

Time: 10 minutes. 

Voice level: whispering, only with your neighbour.

Talking about your weekend

Imagine, you wanted to meet some friends in Arnhem this Saturday. You were supposed to go shopping and watch a movie in the cinema afterwards. 

However, you didn't go. Explain what happened and what you did instead. 

Use at least two negative sentences and two questions in the past simple. 

1. write down the subject. 
2. Write down any words and sentences you can use. (See stones, theme words). 
3. Write down the order of information. 
4. Write your first version. 
5. Check grammar, spelling and word order. 
6. Write your final version. 

Tomorrow

Test chapter 1: probably on the 30th of September. 

Study:  theme words, the stones, grammar 1 and 2 and irregular verbs (verleden tijd) on page 214 and 215.
