Je gebruikt de past continuous als iemand in het verleden een tijdje iets aan het doen was.

Past Continuous VS Past Simple

What	Past continuous VS Past simple
When	Past continuous: Een langere actviteit in het verleden die uiteindelijk stopte. Past simple: Om aan te geven dat iets in het verleden is gebeurd (kortere activiteit).
How	Past continuous: Was/Were+ Werkwoord+ing Past simple: Werkwoord+ed/2de rij
Signal words	WHEN, WHILE
Examples	He was swimming in the ocean WHEN he saw a dolphin. They were listening to spotify WHEN Jimmy's phone broke . I was screaming , WHILE we hit the road sign.

Past continuous

Can 

CAN = Kunnen 

• Mogelijkheden.
• Stress can cause health problems.
• Vaardigheden (iets wat je goed of niet goed kunt).
• My mother can speak Spanish.
• Toestemming (vragen).
• Can I go tot the toilet?

Could

COULD = Zou kunnen

COULD is beleefder dan CAN

• Vaardigheden in de verledentijd voor dingen, mensen en dieren.
• My first car could drive up to 290 km per hour .
• Toestemming  in de verleden tijd. 
• We couldn't  go outside after 8 pm
• Mogelijkheden

• You could start a hobby if you want something new in your life.

Should

• Advies geven.
• You look hungry, you should eat something.
• You should stop smoking. It's bad for you.

Have to

• verplichtingen / geen keus
• You have to do your homework, otherwise you'll be in detention.
• You have to pass your driving exam first if you want to drive a car.
