Mastering Verb Tenses

Learning Objective

At the end of the lesson, you will be able to differentiate and use past simple, present perfect, and present perfect continuous tenses correctly.

What do you already know about past simple, present perfect, and present perfect continuous?

Past Simple

Describes completed actions in the past. Formed by adding -ed or irregular verb forms. 

 'I played tennis yesterday.'

Present Perfect

Links the past and present.

Describes past actions with a connection to the present.

Formed with 'have/has + past participle'. 

'I have visited Paris.'

Present Perfect Continuous

Describes ongoing actions that started in the past and continue into the present. 

Formed with 'have/has been + present participle'. 

 'She has been studying all day.'

Past Simple Examples

1. He walked to school. 

2. They cooked dinner last night. 

3. We watched a movie.

Present Perfect Examples

1. She has studied French for five years. 

2. They have traveled to many countries. 

3. I have never seen that movie.

Present Perfect Continuous Examples

1. He has been working on the project for hours. 

2. We have been waiting for the bus since morning. 

3. They have been playing soccer all afternoon.
