What two questions is Bronwyn left with at the end of part one? What 2 mysteries?

Slide 5 - Question ouverte

The mystery:
• If Simon had known about her cheating, her taking Mr Camino’s files last March why hadn’t he used that information right away?

• What other reason did Bronwyn have to dislike Simon? She had lied to the police and her parents when the police had first confronted her about the post Simon had written but had not published and they asked her whether she had any other reason to dislike or resent Simon.

Bronwyn has not much information on Addy at this point.

The two mysteries are important here:
- How did Simon know about her cheating?
- What did Bronwyn lie about to her parents?

Perhaps, as an additional assignment, have the Bronwyn's work together on a Bronwyn quiz. All in all, students should have relevant information on Bronwyn in their Instagram/ Pinterest and in their Coggle.
The title of part one alludes to ...
A
Simon Kelleher's app
B
a quote from Simon

Bronwyn's assignment is a little less extensive than for instance Nate's. That's because the person reading Bronwyn's part has more reading to do. This is compensation ;).

TRUTH OR DARE

Slide 23 - Diapositive

Cet élément n'a pas d'instructions

Explain TRUTH or DARE in relation to your character: Bronwyn.

Slide 24 - Question ouverte

Nate and Bronwyn have something in common: they both told a lie that was easier than the truth, both half believing it.

Nate's lie: his mum died
Bronwyn's lie: she cheated

"I know what it's like to tell yourself a lie so often that it becomes the truth."
What is the main struggle in Nate's and Bronwyn's friendship / relationship?
A
They are not a stereotypical couple and don't want to defend themselves towards others.
B
They both have a hard time telling the truth.
C
They cannot hang out in public because of the police investigation.
D
Their lives are polar opposites.

Slide 25 - Quiz

The main struggle is that Nate, for instance, does not know how to be with Bronwyn because he has never had anyone in his life who was there for him. Also, she is on the Ivy League track and he's headed for a construction job. They're miles apart.

Why doesn't Bronwyn trust Janae?
A
Janae has become thinner and thinner like she is hiding something.
B
Bronwyn and Maeve found out that Janae hang out on the same 4chan platform as Simon.
C
She can't figure her out: why would she sit with 'the murder club' when they are such a cruel reminder of Simon?
D
She seems too eager to find out any details relating to the police investigation.

Slide 26 - Quiz

Even though A is also true, it is not THE reason Bronwyn doesn't trust her. When Janae's been ill for a week it is time for  Addy to pay Janae a home visit, especially after 'the murder club' meeting in which they considered Janae to be a loose thread. Bronwyn warns her to be careful, she doesn't trust Janae.
What is the latest Tumblr post about?
A
The person responsible for the smoke screen of suspects is bragging about getting away with murder.
B
About how the police should go after one of the teacher too because they consider him to be a witness rather than a suspect, which is a stupid oversight.
C
How the police could have unraveled the mystery if only they had found the evidence he had so carefully placed with Addy

Slide 27 - Quiz

Cet élément n'a pas d'instructions

How does Bronwyn find out about Nate's arrest?
A
Addy rings her to tell her about the arrest.
B
Mrs Macauley sent her a text to see her in court.
C
Maeve alerts her it's on TV.
D
Cooper drops by her house to tell her.

Slide 28 - Quiz

Cet élément n'a pas d'instructions

How does Bronwyn prove to Nate that she's not about to give up on him?
A
She contacts Nate's mum and Eli Kleinfelter.
B
She calls Nate's mum every day to get an update.
C
She asks her parents to find Nate a lawyer.
D
She visits Nate in juvenile prison despite his wishes.

Slide 29 - Quiz

Nate doesn't have anybody to look out for him so Bronwy feels she needs to be in his corner. He needs a good lawyer so she keeps contacting Eli Kleinfelter. He says his workload is too heavy already but he will see Nate's mum to give her advice. When Eli learns that Nate's pro bono lawyer hasn't taken the correct steps yet he decides to take over. From that point on Bronwyn is not allowed to meet with Eli anymore.
Why did the police think Nate was guilty of Simon's murder?
A
Nate's neighbour found the drug stash together with some peanut oil and passed it on to the police.
B
The police found a computer in Nate's lcoker with his journal. (i.e. the Tumblr posts).
C
The police tracked down the cars from the school parking lot incident and they identified Nate as the person who hired them.

Slide 30 - Quiz

B: they refer to a closet but later Nate says yes to 'do you keep your locker unlocked?' in a police interview.
Who finally 'breaks' part of the case?
A
Luis
B
Janae
C
Addy
D
Mrs Macauley

Slide 31 - Quiz

Luis has a pal who works in an auto repair shop. He repaired the car with the fender bender and knows the identity of the driver. (Cooper asked Luis to check it out.)

Bronwyn looks up the driver and confronts him. The driver, Sam Barron, has seen the boy who asked him to create 'the accident' on TV. It was Simon.

The other answer to this question would be 'Kris' but ... the Bronwyn part doesn't include that information. The Cooper part does.
Take a screenshot of your group coggle - whole book.

Slide 32 - Question ouverte

Cet élément n'a pas d'instructions

What information new information did you learn about your character that you didn't know from what you read?

Slide 33 - Question ouverte

Bronwyn's part doesn't know much about the evidence that was planted in Nate's locker.
Addy found out that Janae did the planting. Janae couldn't plant the evidence on Addy because they were becoming friends, so she planted the evidence on Nate. He also made a convenient scapegoat because he often left his locker open.
Bronwyn also doesn't know how Nate is doing because he told his mum not to let Bronwyn visit him.

Cooper’s part shares the meeting in the café where Bronwyn passes on information to Eli Kleinfelter (via Ashton who is the object of Eli’s instant affection) about the not-so-accidental car accident. This is an important part of the book since it is Kris who figures out what to make of all the evidence post-its Maeve and Bronwyn prepared.
Addy's part shares what happened with Janae and Jake.
Write Bronwyn's yearbook entry keeping in mind all she's been through. What lesson would she like to pass on? Min. 80 words. Take a picture of her yearbook entry. Bring to class too.

school shootings?

Slide 37 - Carte mentale

At American high schools, some students …
o have lockdown drills in which they pretend a shooter is in their school
o are taught a procedure called ‘run, hide, fight’
o have teachers who have access to guns
o experience security measures like metal detectors

Possible solutions according to high school students:
o Raise the age to buy firearms
o Ban firearms
o Regulate ammunition
o Vote
o Demand change

action would be taken if this were a faulty product
despite media portrayals they are multi-faceted
A crisis on various level

gun laws are at the surface of the issue
but ... no concern for people's lives
--> change the culture about guns
--> make it harder for mentally ill people to own guns
--> gun lobby restriction
--> keep guns out of the hands of teenagers
--> common sense: fewer guns, fewer shootings

Societal problem:
negative stigma around mental health
--> talk about it! Anxiety for instance.
"Boys don't cry". = weak and feminine but this is wrong at a basic level. Also, around 60% of suicides are male - so talking about problems is vital!!!
- mental illness likely to be in the mind of the shooter
- male entitlement (white males - often the shooters!). Starts at birth.
- Toxic masculinity. Limit the range of emotion. We excuse violent behaviour when they are white males.
- Sante Fe shooter. Targeted the class of a girl who refused to date him.
- Toxic masculinity affects not only the white males, it affects everyone!
- The point isn't all men are like this, but enough are and we need to treat this problem.

The psychological profile of a school shooter:
- he won't fit in the box of toxic masculinity
- fell through the cracks of the mental health system - he went unrecognised
- has access to a gun

She feels society doesn't take responsibility for its issues.

She turned her feelings into action in the TED Talk. Give time to an organisation that votes against gun violence etc. Also, talk about it at home, keep it in your mind's eye. Have that tough conversation.
Stand up and realise that change is in order! Talk about mental health.
Stop using femininity as an insult.
