De gewoonte van het plaatsen van schoenen dateert al uit de vijftiende eeuw. Er zijn verslagen dat dit gebruik al in 1427 in de Sint Nicolaaskerk in Utrecht werd toegepast. Op de avond van Sinterklaas wordt er geld in de schoenen gestopt, dat vervolgens aan de behoeftigen wordt geschonken. Later mochten ook kinderen thuis hun schoen of klomp zetten, en de volgende ochtend vonden ze daar lekkernijen in.

Een tijd is het feest afgeschaft geweest. Na 1800 wordt het Sinterklaasfeest weer officieel toegestaan en gevierd zoals we dat nu nog steeds doen.
