Strategy; How do you listen? Three tips!

There are three ways of listening - also called listening strategies - that you need to practise in order to become an effective listener:

Strategy 1: listening for gist (kern)

You listen to get a general idea of the topic and the main points. You ignore the details and concentrate on the main ideas.

For instance, you admire Post Malone and want to know everything about him. You already know a lot about him anyway. Online you find an interview with him that you haven’t heard yet. You listen to the interview, but only to find out if you hear anything new and interesting.

Strategy 2: listening for specific information

You listen in order to understand specific information.

For instance, you admire Post Malone and want to know if he is happy being famous. Online you find an interview with Post Malone in which he talks about this. You listen to the interview, but only pay attention when the topic of being famous comes up, so you hear what Post Malone says about this specific topic.

Strategy 3: listening for detailed understanding

You listen to understand (a part of) a spoken text in great detail. You can’t afford to ignore any information, because you don’t know which information will come up that will interest you or that you will need.

For instance, you admire Post Malone and want to know everything about him. You don’t know anything about him yet, you only know his music. Online you find an interview with Post Malone. You listen to the entire interview in great detail, because you want to know about everything Post Malone has to say.

Je gaat zo kijken naar een interview met drie beroemde acteurs: Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt en Margot Robbie.

Je krijgt de eerste helft van de video te zien. Zorg ervoor dat je zoveel mogelijk onthoud van wat er wordt gezegd. Maak eventueel aantekeningen.
