If-sentences

Wanneer gebruiken we de first conditional? 

- Wordt gebruikt als het mogelijk is dat iets gaat gebeuren OF voor dingen die over het algemeen waar zijn. 

(We noemen 'if-sentences' over mogelijke situaties ook wel de 'first conditional'). 

If I won a lot of money, I would buy a big house in the country.

Opbouw first conditional

Een 'first conditional' wordt altijd op dezelfde manier gebruikt:

If we miss the bus,                       we will get a taxi.

Present Simple               +               Will + hele ww.

Second conditional

De second conditional is een if-zin die je kunt gebruiken voor dingen waarvan het onwaarschijnlijk is dat ze gaan gebeuren. 

Je geeft ermee aan dat iets zal gebeuren in het onwaarschijnlijke geval dat er aan de voorwaarde (de if-zin) wordt voldaan. 

If I won the lottery, I would buy a new house for my parents.

Second conditional

Een second conditional wordt altijd op dezelfde manier opgebouwd.

If I won the lottery,             I would buy a new house.

            Past simple         +          would + hele werkwoord

Use the second conditional

1. We ...................(not-like) it if they ..............(to move) to Canada.

2. If she......(to practise) harder, she ......... ( to be).

3. If I .................. (to find) a bag full of money, I ......( not - to take) it home.

Second conditional

Mind you:

Als je in het deel van de zin waar if staat het werkwoord to be moet gebruiken, gebruik je in alle gevallen were in plaats van was.

I wouldn't really like it if dad were famous. 

Second conditionals:
If you ...... (have) a better job, we
...... (be) able to buy a new car.

3. Have / would be
4. Has / would be

Second conditionals:
If we .... (live) in Mexico, I ...... (speak) Spanish.

1. Lives / would speak
2. Lived / would speak
3. Lived / 'd speak
4. Live / would speak
