What is the difference between a criminal act and a deviant one?

Criminal Act
  • Actions (behaviour) that will constitute an offence under English Law and will be punishable by law. 
Deviant Act
  • Any behaviour that violates social/cultural norms or accepted standards
  • Society (or the majority of society) will generally disapprove of deviant behaviour

Crimes that are committed by people in a position of power or authority 

Criminologist Edwin Sutherland defined WCC as 'a crime committed by a person of respectability and high social status in the course of their occupation'

WWC are:
  • consumers
  • tax payers/the government
  • employees/employers
  • the public - pollution of environment 
Criminologist Steve Tombs estimated there are 1,100 work related deaths resulting from employers breaking the law

Types of Offender
People in the course of their occupation: accountants, lawyers, doctors etc
  • Corporate Crime - crime committed on behalf of a company e.g. tax evasion
  • Professional crime - committed by a professional e.g. accountants

Level of Public Awareness
Level of public awareness is often low as perpetrators use sophisticated methods. Reasons for low public awareness include:
  • media coverage - limited
  • under-reporting - victims often don't feel know they have been victimised, don't regard it as a real crime or feel it won't make a difference
  • de-labelling - offences are often labelled as breaches of regulations rather than crimes
  • power and respectability - offenders high status means they are less likely to be suspected and they have the power to avoid prosecution

Deviant and/or Criminal?
WCC are criminal but often labelled a breach of regulation. 

WCC are deviant and can cause harm. They often involve a betrayal of trust. In Sutherlands view this makes it even more deviant than an ordinary crime
