What is Medieval Theatre?
  • Theatre in Europe between 5th Century A.D. (=anno domini/=na Christus) and the beginning of the renaissance (15th Century).
  • Medieval theatre covers a variety of genres: mystery plays, morality plays, miracle plays.

The origins ...
  • Church!
  • Performances when there were religious occasions (Easter/Christmas)
  • Bible heavy influence on the plays shown
  • Priests were the actors!

Staging
  1. At first, the plays were performed at inside the church (at front).
  2. Then, at platforms around the church (audience followed the actors)
  3. Plays became less religious , so...they staged them outdoors!

Intro assignment
  • Get into groups (4 people = max)
  • Create 3 tableau vivants (pictures) within the medieval genre: morality
  • Use the comic sheet to draw them first.
    1st tableau: beginning, 2nd tableau: climax, 3rd tableau: the end.
  • You can use light and sound today to add atmosphere to the performance, but it's not obliged yet.
