The governance of the Republic

De Republic was governed by a small group
 of regents: rich men who had become
wealthy because of trade.

The most important functions were 

1. the pensionary of Holland: the highest official of Holland
   
2. Stadholder: the commander of the army (and always a member of the Orange family)

The End of the Golden Age

1672 noted the end of the Golden Age with the Year of Disaster. 

Causes:

1. England wanted to take over the powerful position the Republic had 
2. The French king wanted to conquer parts of the Republic 
3. The German cities Munster and Keulen attacked because of an alliance with France.
