Gatsby meets Daisy 

'We haven't met for many years,' said Daisy, her voice as matter-of-fact last it could ever be. 

'Five years next November' 

'The automatic quality of Gatsby's answer set us all back at least another minute. pg 84 

'Look at this, said Gatsby, quickly. 'Here's a lot of clippings - about you.' They stood side by side examining it. I was going to ask to see the rubies when the phone rang, and Gatsby took the receiver. pg 90 

Gatsby's stuck in the past 

When Gatsby meets Daisy he nearly causes a clock to fall from the mantelpiece. Significantly this clock is already "defunct", thus time has stopped for Gatsby because he's fixated on the past.
