Mccarthyism

• Witch hunt on communists in the USA
• Politician Joseph McCarthy accused many civil servants, writers, teachers, movie stars, etc...
• Many went on a black list and were unable to work
• It slowed down in the late 50s due to lack of evidence

• Suspicion because communists loyal to Russia right?
• 60s saw Marxism become popular with youth groups and intellectuals - link to fight for equality and socialism
