Goal: I know when and how to use a reflexive pronoun or a reciprocal pronoun in English sentences.

Reflexive and reciprocal pronouns

I took a picture of myself. > Ik nam een foto van mezelf.

She bought herself a new computer. > Zij kocht een nieuwe computer voor zichzelf.

Je gebruikt wederkerende voornaamwoorden (= reflexive pronoun) om te praten over situaties waarbij het onderwerp en het lijdend voorwerp dezelfde persoon zijn.

Let op! In het Engels gebruik je geen wederkerend voornaamwoord na werkwoorden als wash, dress en shave, behalve wanneer je nadruk wil leggen op wie de handeling uitvoert.

 Reflexive and reciprocal pronouns 

They saw each other at the festival. Zij zagen elkaar op het festival.

You have to look after one another! > Jullie moeten voor elkaar zorgen!

Je gebruikt de wederkerige voornaamwoorden (= reciprocal pronouns) each other en one another om te praten over ‘elkaar’.

 Reflexive and reciprocal pronouns 

They kissed when she got home.

Let op! In het Engels gebruik je geen wederkerig voornaamwoord na werkwoorden als marry, hug, en kiss die al aangeven dat de handeling van beide kanten komt. 

Wat betekent "each other, one another"? bijv. They talk to each other.
