Did you know … ?
The Dutch explorer Abel Tasman first discovered
New Zealand in 1642 and called them Staten
Landt. He thought they were part of South
America. When later explorers discovered that
the islands weren’t even close to South America,
they gave them a new name: Nova Zeelandia, after
the Dutch province of Zeeland. The famous British
explorer James Cook later translated this into
New Zealand.
