Unit 5: Zero, first and second conditionals

- Zero, First and Second Conditional

Which one is the zero conditional sentence?

1. If Greg practiced more, he would be a great pianist.
2. If Sarah drives to Amsterdam, she will have to pay for parking.
3. If you sleep well, you have more energy.

Zero conditional

We use the zero conditional if something always or usually happens. 

Fill in the gaps, use the Zero Conditional:

Fill in the gaps, use the Zero Conditional:

We use the first conditional to talk about a possible action in the future.

Second conditional

We use the second conditional to: 

1. Talk about imaginary situations in the present 
2.  Talk about present/future situations which are possible but unlikely
3.  Give advice 

Fill in the gaps, use the Second Conditional:

Fill in the gaps, use the Second Conditional:

Beyoncé: If I were a boy, I would turn off my phone. ( = imaginary situation)

Unless, in case, if I were you

• We can use unless instead of if not.  

I can't help you unless you tell me your problem. 

• We can use (just) in case instead of if when we want to stress 'to be safe or prepared.' 

I'll take my coat (just) in case it gets cold. 

• We can use if I were you to give some advice. (conditional?)

If I were you, I would change football teams. 

Unless

in case

I won't come ... you want me to. 

I bought tickets early ... they run out. 

I won't wave at you, ... it makes you nervous. 

You won't survive in show business ... you have the right contacts. 

He won't go on stage ... we go with him.

I'll stay with you, ... your parents are late.

Unit 6: The passive

Active Voice

Wild penguins attacked my sister yesterday. 

Passive Voice

My sister was attacked by wild penguins yesterday. 

When do we use the passive?

• When we want to focus more on the action than the person who does or did the action. 

•  When we don't know or don't want to say who does or did the action, or if it's obvious. 

How do we make the passive?

To be + past participle (voltooid deelwoord)

Examples:

Active: A zebra stopped the traffic.

Passive: The traffic was stopped by a zebra. 

Active: The teacher teaches the students. 

Passive: The students are taught (by the teacher). 

What is the subject in the sentence?

The lion bit the man.

What is the object in the sentence?

The lion bit the man.

Is this sentence active or passive?

The lion bit the man.

Make the sentence passive.

Present Simple

subject + am/is/are + past participle

Past Simple

subject + was/were + past participle

Put the words in the correct order.

Have/ get something done

• subject + have/get + object + past participle 
• To get something done is less formal 

I have my hair cut at Headlines Studio. 

I get my make-up done by Selina.
