what is a question tag?

QUESTION TAGS

• You know what a question tag is used for;
•  You know how to create a question tag;
• You can relate its use in Dutch to its use in English.

THE MINI QUESTION

A tag question is a special construction in English. It is a statement followed by a mini-question. We use tag questions to ask for confirmation. They mean something like: "Is that right?" or "Do you agree?" They are very common in English.

How to use a tag question?

• (Hulp)Werkwoord + persoonlijk voornaamwoord
• Sometimes you also use the word 'not' in the tag question. He isn't smart, is he? (tag = verb + pronoun)
• names change to pronouns

the use of do/does in question tags

• In de eerste zin maar 1 ww?  Dan in question tag het hulpje (do/does gebruiken)
• Let op to be!

What steps to take?

1. Staat er 1 of 2 werkwoorden? Welke gebruik je?
2. turn name (John) into pronoun (He)
3. use not if necessary (Positief word negatief en negatief word positief!)

An example

Nina can sing very well, ........?

1. (question)    Can Nina sing very well?
2. (pv/ow)          Can Nina?
3. (pronoun)    Can she?
4. (not?)             Can't she?

Another example

James works very hard, ..........?

1. (question)    Does James work very hard?
2. (pv/ow)          Does James?
3. (pronoun)    Does he?
4. (not?)             Doesn't he?
