Check passport/ID/visa for:

• validity (not expired?) 
• photo (is this the same person?)
• name (same as in ticket?)
• visa (correct and valid?)
• authenticity (not forged?)

second passport

• if you frequently visit countries that are in conflict with each other (Israel/Iran)
• if you travel a lot and your passport is waiting for a visa at an embassy 

business passport

• for frequent travellers 
• normal passport, only with more pages for visa/stamps

diplomatic/service passport

if someone is travelling on behalf of a government:

• embassy employees
• diplomats
• heads of state/ministers/ state secretaries
• UN officials (VN)

alien's / refugees passport

• for people with a valid residence permit, who are not yet Dutch citizens
• recognizable by the stripes on the front at the top left
• valid for a maximum of 5 years 

emergency passport

• temporary passport in case of loss/theft/disappearance of the original document at the start of the journey
• to be obtained at the military constabulary (Marechaussee) Schiphol 

laissez-passer

• when it's impossible to make an emergency passport 
• hand written
• usually only to travel to home country

 Seaman's book

• used by sea men instead of a passport
• must contain the same information as a regular passport
• must be accompanied by 'letter of guarantee' from the sea men's company (company guarantees transport)

types of visa

Visa:

Visa: required for some countries (Timatic!)

• you apply for a visa at an embassy/consulate
• many types: 

     - tourist visa

     - business visa

     - work visa

     - student visa

     - passengers in transit (doorreis) visa

special visa:

• TWOV (transit without visa): arrangement between countries for pax who only have to transfer at an airport where no visa is required. 
• Visa on arrival: you buy this visa upon arrival (often just a stamp in the passport)

Task for PGSA:

Check for:

• expiry date visa
• correctness of visa (purpose of trip?)
• number of times visa may be used  (single, dual or multiple entry) 

additional entry requirements

Schengen agreement:

passengers travelling from the Netherlands to a destination within the Schengen area:

• security check

passengers travelling from the Netherlands to a destination outside of the Schengen area:

• security check
• passport check 

API (Advanced Passenger Information)

Additional passenger data is required for some countries outside  the Schengen area, to prevent terrorism/serious crime. 

This must be completed by the airline upon check-in:

• full name
• date of birth
• address at destination
• e-mail address
• phone number to be reached when at destination (2nd for emergency)

travel authorisation

• Some countries require pax to apply for a travel authorisation in advance.  Well known examples: ESTA (USA) and ETA (Australia and Canada).
• ESTA can be applied online for trips of up to 90 days and must be applied for at least 72 hours before departure. It is possible to do this last minute at Schiphol as well. 

health declaration

• Since Covid-19, it has become commono to need a heath certificate when travelling to a country.
• the passenger is responsible for the right documents. 
• Airlines inform passengers as a service (and to prevent problems)
