Wanneer gebruik je de passive?
Je gebruikt de passive als iets gedaan wordt. 

- het gaat dan niet om wie het doet maar juist om wat er gedaan wordt

VB: All the tickets were sold out within 10 minutes.
The window was broken.

Passive vs. Active
Actieve zin (wordt vaker gebruikt in spreektaal) = werkwoord geeft aan wat het onderwerp doet:
"My grandfather was a builder. He built this house in 1961."

Passieve zin (wordt vaker gebruikt in schrijftaal) = werkwoord geeft aan wat er met het onderwerp gebeurt:
"My grandfather was a builder. This house was built in 1961 by
  my grandfather."

Passive = vorm van 'to be' + voltooid deelwoord
Welke vorm to be heeft, hangt af in welke tijd de zin staat.

My room is being cleaned.
 I think loads of films have been made there.
I was told the scenery in Avatar was based on this landscape.
The girls are decorated with flowers.

Van active naar passive: 4 stappen
  1. Voeg een vorm van to be toe in dezelfde ww tijd als de active sentence.
  2. Maak van het hoofdwerkwoord een voltooid deelwoord
  3. Maak van het (lijdend of meewerkend) voorwerp een onderwerp.
  4. Kun je het onderwerp achter by  zetten achteraan de zin

What makes a sentence passive?
The combination of 'to be' + past participle (volt. dlw) makes a sentence passive

The woman is bitten (by the dog).

The wound was stitched (by the doctor).
