When you swing a ball around, you exercise a centripetal force to keep the ball from moving in the direction of the centrifugal force.

Notice that the ball is constantly changing direction, which means that the ball must be accelerating. The centripetal force is the force causing the ball to change direction.

Keep in mind that rotation, even
when the ball is moving with a
constant speed, is always accelerated.

Another thing.... the centripetal force is the real force which is applied by you, while the centrifugal force is not a real force at all.

We call it a force because from the perspective of the object, it seems as if there is a force at work which pulls it outside of the orbit the ball goes through.
