End of the 18th century, Louis XVI king of France > absolute monarch

French Revolution

Revolution = an event that causes major changes in government and society in a short timespan.

Three causes:

• Huge inequality and injustice of the 

       Ancien Régime; 

• Enlightened ideas about society 

       and government; 

• France’s lack of money.

French Revolution

• King wanted nobility and clergy to pay taxes
• Meeting of States General 
• Argument about way of voting
• National Assembly (people's parliament)
• 14 July Storming of Bastille

A new society

• National Assembly abolished privileges

• Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen > fundamental rights

• 1791 constitution
