This is a trick to help you understand and use the passive, which is why I make you do it - here and on the test.

Waarom moet ik dit kunnen? 

Als je van een actieve naar een passieve zin herschrijft, veranderen de functies van de zinsdelen. 

Als volgt: 

Passive

Stappen bij herschrijven van active naar passive

1. Heeft de actieve zin een meewerkend voorwerp? Dit wordt onderwerp van de passieve zin en komt vooraan in de zin..

2. Heeft de actieve zin wel een lijdend voorwerp, maar geen meewerkend voorwerp? Het lijdend voorwerp wordt onderwerp van de passieve zin en komt vooraan in de zin

3. Geen lijdend én geen meewerkend voorwerp? Je kunt de zin niet passief maken.

4. Kijk naar de tijd waarin de persoonsvorm staat. Present simple? Schrijf op am / is / are. Past simple: schrijf op was / were. Hulpwerkwoord? Schrijf het hulpwerkwoord over en zet er be achter.

5. Zet het oorspronkelijke hoofdwerkwoord in het voltooid deelwoord.

6. Is je meewerkend voorwerp onderwerp geworden? Dan komt het lijdend voorwerp van de actieve zin als lijdend voorwerp in de passieve zin, direct na het voltooid deelwoord.

7. Zet er eventueel by + het oorspronkelijke onderwerp bij als dit zin heeft. 

8. Zet de bijwoordelijke bepalingen erbij. 

Voorbeeld 1 

The teacher gave us detention. 

De zin heeft een meewerkend voorwerp. 

Zet dit vooraan in de zin en denk aan de naamval. 

We...... 

Voorbeeld 1 

The teacher gave us detention. 

De actieve zin staat in de past simple, detention is enkelvoud. 

Schrijf op were 

We were .............

Het voltooid deelwoord van give is onregelmatig: given. 

Schrijf op given 

We were given ....

Het lijdend voorwerp uit de oorspronkelijke zin blijft lijdend voorwerp in de passieve zin (want het oorspronkelijke meewerkend voorwerp is onderwerp geworden). 

We were given detention

Het oorspronkelijke onderwerp zet je erbij: by + oorspronkelijk onderwerp

We were given detention by the teacher

We went  on holiday to Italy last year. 

De zin heeft geen meewerkend voorwerp

De zin heeft geen lijdend voorwerp

De zin kan niet passief gemaakt worden. 

Voorbeeld 3 

The police will arrest the criminals tomorrow. 

De zin heeft geen meewerkend voorwerp.

De zin heeft wel een lijdend voorwerp. 

Zet dit vooraan in de zin. 

The criminals....

will is een hulpwerkwoord. Neem dit over en zet er "be" achter

Het voltooid deelwoord van arrest is arrested

Je lijdend voorwerp is onderwerp geworden, dus dat komt niet meer terug. 

"By the police" kun je er bij zetten, maar het hoeft niet. 

The criminals will be arrested  by the police

Je tijdsbepaling "tomorrow"  komt achteraan. 

The criminals will be arrested  by the police tomorrow

Make these sentences passive. You have 10 minutes
