Direct / Indirect Speech
Answer the following  in pairs:

2. Give an example of each (English)

Quoted / Direct Speech (actual)

Pres. Simple: She eats an apple
Pres. continuous: She is gossiping
Pres. perfect:  He has had a shower


Reported Speech (later)

Past Simple: 'She ate an apple...'
Past continuous: 'She was gossiping....'
Past perfect: 'He had had a shower...'

Directe Rede/ Direct Speech:  She always said "I love watching football"

Indirecte Rede / Indirect Speech: My grandmother always said that she loved watching football

Present Simple --> Past Simple
           (man) :   I am painting  .....wordt.....he was painting

Present Continuous --> Past Continuous
             He is watching TV......wordt.....he was watching TV

Present Perfect --> Past perfect

How to use Reported Speech
The 5 Steps :

  1. Define the type of the sentence (statement, questions, command) 
  2. Which time is being used? 
  3. Do you need to change the pronoun (voorzetsel) :  (I = she)
  4. Do you have to backshift the tenses? ( tijden veranderen)
  5. Do you have to change expressions of time and place? (Here = there)
