REGIME

Fluctuations in a river's flow rate in a year.

FLOW RATE

The amount of water flowing at a particular point in the river (expressed in m3/sec).

FLOODPLAINS

Area between dikes and the river bed.

Climate change

• Warmer = more water vapour above sea = more moiste air above land
• More rain instead of snow
• Heavy downpours, especially in summer

EXERCISE 3

a. A river consists of a principal river and many tributaries, and together they form a large river system.

b. That a lot of water is carried away

a. A water outlet on the other side of the dike; it is only needed when water levels are extremely high.

b. An extra drainage channel between the dike and the river bed, used when the water level is high.

f. 1 Make the river bed deeper.

2. Remove the brickworks and summer dikes.

The west of the Netherlands is close to the sea, and salt water can easily penetrate inland during periods of drought.

a. Two possible maps:

44A: The water from many catchment areas of international rivers flows into the Netherlands.

44B: Flood waves in the catchment area of the Rhine flow into the Netherlands.

c. From December until the end of April. In this period, the flow rate (the amount of water flowing at a particular point in the river) is highest.

c. River water must be stored there if it cannot flow into the sea because of a storm.
