But France and England do not intervene.

Many German-speaking people lived here who felt more connected to Germany than to Austria.

Hitler also wanted to take the Sudetenland (Czechoslovakia). France, England and Russia were now worried.

The war is near

Poland was the next country on Hitler's wish list.

Hitler signed a non-aggression pact with Russian leader Joseph Stalin. A week later, on September 1, 1939, the German army invaded Poland.

England and France declared war on Germany.
