Epistolary novels
  • These are novels that consist of documents (letters, newspaper articles, diary entries, etc.) 
  • From the Greek “ἐπιστολή” (epistolē,) meaning ‘letter.’
  • Used to make a story more realistic and to eliminate the use of an omniscient narrator.
  • In Frankenstein, Mary Shelley uses letters written by Robert Walton, which makes it an epistolary novel. 
  • What is the difference between the effect of using letters and using a omniscient narrator?
