The Commonwealth
The Commonwealth of Nations (short: The Commonwealth) is a group of 56 states. Most of these states are former territories of the British Empire (colonies). The main goal for the Commonwealth is to support each other and work together.

The countries are independent but still have the British Monarch as the symbolic head. For some countries
King Charles III is also their head of State which would place him above their own elected leaders.

The last country to join the (British) commonwealth was the country of Rwanda in 2009.
But there have been rumours that some countries might want to leave the Commonwealth due to currect events.

What "event" do we mean?
Former territories             voormalige gebieden
independent                       zelfstandig
elected                                 (democratisch) gekozen

due to current events       vanwege recente gebeurtenissen
