New Year's traditions in the Netherlands
The new year is an exciting time for many people, a lot of people start the new year with new goals and plans, new year's resolutions. In the Netherlands there are 5 well known traditions that people do on the 31st of December or the 1rst of January.

The most crazy new year's tradition dutch people have is to take a new year's dive. People go to the sea and swim or dip in it on the first of January. People do this because it is a symbol for a new beginning, it is also said to be good for your health.

Tradition 2
Proberbly the best known tradition in the Netherlands is the tradition of eating Oliebollen. An Oliebol is deep-fried dough often eaten with powderd suger. You can buy them at special Oliebollen stands in the city or in almost every supermarket. The Oliebol is a traditional Dutch New Year's snack.

Tradition 3
Another tradition in the Netherlands is to buy an ouderjaarslot. This is a lottery ticket that only exists for the new year. The winner of this ticket is announced at midnight. The prize people win is a lot of money, for example 30.000.000 euros. The change that you win is really small.

Tradition 4
The most dangerous and exciting tradition is to light fireworks. In many other country there are big firework shows at midnight, but in the Netherlands people can light there own firework on the streat. In some cities it is forbidden to light any fireworks but not many people care. Watch out when you light it because many people get wounded and some even die.

Tradition 5
The last tradition in the Netherlands is one that happens in other countries as well, listening to the best songs of all time. In the Netherlands people vote for their favourite songs of all time. The 2000 songs with the most votes get played during a music marathon on the radio. It starts on Christmas day and ends right before the new Year.
