What are conditionals?
  • A sentence that is made up of an if-clause (= a condition) and a main clause (the result) 
  • We also call them 'if sentences'
  • Describes a situation that might happen or might have happened
  • There are 4 types of conditionals and they are made using different English verb tenses.

Zero Conditional
  • Real factual situations
  • if + present simple, ... present simple
  • e.g. If you heat water to 100 degrees, it boils.
  • If it rains, the soil gets wet

If you ___(freeze) water, it ___ (become) a solid.

First conditional
  • Possible or likely things in the future 
  • if + present simple, ... will + infinitive

Ex:
 If it rains tomorrow, we'll go to the cinema

  • If you like warm weather, you will like Florida.
  • If you go to California, you'll be able to go to great beaches.
  • if you go by plane, it will take about 6 hours.

2nd conditional
  • Unreal, improbable situations
  • if + past simple, .... would + infinitive
  • If I won the lottery, I would buy a mansion

  • Things that did not happen in the past and their imaginary results
  • if + past perfect,... would have + past participle
Ex: If he had stayed at home, he would not have met her.
