Conditionals always comprise of 2 parts:

When it's cold....... it snows.
We will stay at home.........if it snows.
We would stay at home.....if it snowed.
If it hadn't snowed..... we wouldn't have stayed at home.

When it's cold.....it snows.
(facts and or statements)

Difference?
1st conditional: We will stay at home.........if it snows.


 
2nd conditional: We would stay at home.....if it snowed.

First: We will stay at home.........if it snows.
(real or possible conditions)
Main: will + infinitive.......if part: present simple

Second: We would stay at home.....if it snowed.
(theoretical condition or polite expression)
Main: would + infinitive .......if part: past simple
