Part 2 - History

Explorations

- Abel Tasman (Dutch)

- Discovered Tasmania and New Zealand and later Australia's northern coast (1644).

- Britain began colonisation and settling in 1788.

Settlement

- Britain wanted to clean up their prisons because their felons couldn't be sent to the USA.

- They also wanted economical profit.

- First Fleet had 730 felons and about 250 free people.

- in 1830 about 58 000 felons (50 000 mean) had come. They had to work hard in a new country.

Aboriginals

- before 1788 there were more than 1 million Aboriginals. 

- 1861 > 180,000 and 1901 > 95,000

- Many Europeans wanted the Aboriginals to die out.

Stolen generations

- Europeans wanted to stop the Aboriginal culture.

- They stole Aboriginal children and forced them to live Christian lives.

- This resulted in the stolen generations.

Dreamtime

Dreamtime is what the Aboriginals call their beginning of time, when the earth and everything on it came to exist.

Dreamtime stories tell people about some of the things that happened. A lot of stories have a moral, something to learn.
