    Major characters
    • Protagonist: This is your leading man or woman. It’s the person the novel is “about,” or the character whose story lies at the novel’s core.
    • Antagonist: A character in a story who is presented as the chief foe (opposite/bad guy) of the protagonist.

        Major character = round character
        • Make stories more realistic and authentic in their emotion. They have behaviours and personalities we recognize from real life.
        • Generate intrigue via their complexities and surprising actions. We want to know more about them.
        • Are memorable and relatable. We identify and empathize with them, and become invested in the outcome of their story.

              Memorable = Live is like a box of chocolates.

              Minor characters

              • will receive very little “screen time” and are unlikely to be a viewpoint character.
              • won’t have their own subplots. At least not a subplot of any great length or significance.
              • appearances in the novel will be brief and infrequent. Although that doesn’t mean that they can’t shine whenever they are in the spotlight.

              Minors are essentially two-dimensional stereotypes, or flat characters. So there’s no need to spend much time fleshing them out on paper before you begin to write.

                    Setting
                    • Location; include the environment of the story =  physical location, climate, weather, or social and cultural surroundings.
                    • Time; character’s time of life, the time of day, time of year, time period (past, present, or future)

                          Themes:
                          The central idea, topic, or point of a story, essay, or narrative is its theme.

                          a. Major Themes
                          • important and enduring themes of the narrative.
                          • are a part of the entire story. Ex: A book on war would have the major theme of war’s effect on humanity. A romance novel would have the major theme of love.

                                b. Minor Themes
                                Minor themes are; less important and less enduring, appear for part of the narrative, are replaced by another minor theme later in the narrative, provide discussion points for a chapter or two, do not influence the entire story.

                                List of most common themes:
                                •    Good vs. evil.
                                •    Love.
                                •    Redemption; someone is saved from evil
                                •    Courage and perseverance.
                                •    Coming of age.
                                •    Revenge.

                                      Examples:
                                      A book on war may have minor themes such as the home front’s reaction or the political aspects of war. A romance novel may have minor themes such as flirtation,  marriage, and fidelity.

                                      Plot 
                                      include the most significant events of the story and how the characters and their problems change over time.
                                      Plots are typically made up of five main elements:

                                      1. Exposition: Beginning of the story = introduction characters, setting, and the main conflict
                                      2. Rising Action: Crisis of main character = events leading up to conflict & story becomes complicated.
                                      3. Climax: Peak of the story = a major event occurs = main character faces a major enemy, fear, challenge, or other source of conflict.

                                            4. Falling Action: The story begins to slow down and work towards its end, tying up loose ends.
                                            5. Resolution: Like a concluding paragraph that resolves any remaining issues and ends the story.
