Slide 5 - Quiz

The Alps are a folding mountain range. The formation of a folding mountain range happens through a ...
A
endogenic forces
B
exogenic forces

Slide 6 - Quiz

What type of rock has the characteristic layers?

At what plate movement do folding mountains form?
A
Side by side
B
Toward each other
C
Separation

Slide 10 - Quiz

Plate tectonics means
A
That the earth's crust consists of earth plates
B
The movement of the earth's plates
C
Moving the earth's crust
D
That the earth's crust floats on magma

Slide 11 - Quiz

The Alps formed as a result of endogenous forces.
But in what order do they do so?
1
2
3
4
Earth's plates collide, creating the mountain range Alps
Inside the earth flows a viscous mass (magma) on which plates of earth float.
Earth's plates Europe and Africa are moving toward each other due to flowing magma.
The earth consists of a core surrounded by a mantle and capped by the thin crust of the earth.

Slide 15 - Diapositive

How do mountains get smaller?
  • Why is it that one mountain is higher than another?

  • It all has to do with the age of the mountain range and
  • exogenic forces: these forces cause the mountain to slowly wear down

Slide 16 - Diapositive

Weathering
The disintegration (uit elkaar vallen) of rocks by weather and plant growth

Slide 17 - Diapositive

Slide 18 - Vidéo

Types of weathering
Chemical weathering -  is weathering that changes the composition of rock.
Mechanical weathering - when rocks crumble and disintegrate without any changes to their chemical composition
Frost weathering - When water freezes it expands, making the cracks wider and causing chunks of rock to break off

Slide 19 - Diapositive

Erosion
Process by which hard rock is broken down and worn away by water, ice or wind that contains weathered material.
