Comparisons

We use 'comparisons' to compare people, animals and things.

'Comparisons' komt van het werkwoord 'to compare' (vergelijken).

Één lettergreep: -er / -est

Bij woorden van één lettergreep gaan de trappen als volgt:

big - bigger than - the biggest

tall - taller than - the tallest

smart - smarter than - the smartest

The man is old

The other man is older

The woman is the oldest

Twee lettergrepen op -y, 

-er, -le, -ow: -er / -est 

Bij woorden van twee lettergrepen eindigend op 

-y, -er, -le, -ow ook!

happy - happier - the happiest

simple - simpler - the simplest

narrow - narrower - the narrowest

lange woorden: more / most

Bij overige woorden van twee lettergrepen of  meer gaan de trappen als volgt:

beautiful - more beautiful than - the most beautiful

interesting - more interesting than - the most interesting

stunning - more stunning than - the most stunning

Let op! Spelling

Bij woorden van twéé lettergrepen op -y moet je om de spelling denken!

Soms moet je een medeklinker verdubbelen.

I need two volunteers that can act fast

Er staan straks twee rijen met woordjes op het bord. Draai met je rug naar het bord. Ik zeg één van die woordjes. Degene die dat woord als eerste heeft doorgestreept wint die ronde. We spelen drie rondes.

We want to find out who is the FASTEST!

Classroom Olympics in groups

You’re going to work in groups of 4.

You will play at least 3 different games.

Afterwards, write about how the games went using the correct comparisons/superlatives that you’ve learned today. Write at least two comparisons and one superlative about each game (so at least 9 sentences total).

We will discuss your sentences and at the end you will hand in your notes.
