Direct speech: present simple --> reported speech past simple

Direct speech: past simple --> reported speech: past perfect

Reporting verbs

4)  changes in:  - this/that       -time reference: tomorrow, etc. -           - personal pronouns me/you  -  possessive pronouns him/you

Can you explain the rules????

1) a past reporting verb: ’d take; had had ; wouldn’t be able to see; didn’t believe; ’d been avoiding

2 a present reporting verb: My mum says he’s a liar and he’s let me down too many

times.

3  a modal after past reporting verb: My dad said that I shouldn’t call John any more.

4 changes: 

(1) me – you; my birthday – your birthday

(2) his sister –my sister; the night before – last night

(3) he – I; see you – see me

 (4) believe him – believe you 

(5) he’d been – you’ve been 

(6) I shouldn’t – you shouldn’t 

(7) he’s let me down – he’s let you down

Three sorts of questions: 

1. Yes/No answers: Do you want tea?
2. Question word questions: Where? When? How? 
3. Choice questions: Do you prefer tea or coffee? 

1. Questions with Yes/No answers

Asked + if     (Or: asked + whether (= more formal))

active: Do you want tea?

reported: She asked if I wanted more tea

! change in pronoun you --> I 

! No auxiliary do in reported speech  

! Leave out the question tags

! tense changes to past

2. Questions with question words: Where? When? How? 

Active: How are you doing?

Reported: She asked how I was doing. 

 ! pronoun changes: you --> I

! tense changes: are doing --> was doing

! asked + question word + (no auxiliary do)  

3. Questions with a choice

(Same as #1)

A: Do you like that black dog or the brown one? 

R: My father asked if I liked the black dog or the blue one. 

! Pronoun changes: You --> I 

! tense backshifts (turns to past) 

! asked + if/whether 

! No  do only with not: didn't

How do you turn a short answer into reported speech? 

A: Do you like tea? Yes, I do.

R: The waiter asked if I liked tea and I said I did. 

A: Will you go out with me tonight? No, I won't.

R: He asked me if I would go out with him  that night, but I said I wouldn't 

Use the same auxiliary or modal!!
