In literature we usually divide texts into two major types:
Fiction and Nonfiction.

Slide 3 - Diapositive


Fiction = literature that is made up. It comes from the writer’s imagination. Examples of the genre of fiction are e.g. a play, a poem, fairytale, science fiction or fantasy.
Nonfiction = literature about real people, places, things and ideas, containing facts that can be checked and proven. Examples of nonfiction genres are e.g. a biography, a news article, a travel journal or a textbook.

Characters
There are two meanings of the word character:
1) The person in a work of fiction.
2) The character traits of a person.

Characterization is the information the author gives the reader about the characters themselves.

The author may reveal a character in several ways, by describing:
a. directly what he or she is like (humble, dainty, ambitious etc.)
b. what he or she looks like
c. what he/she says, thinks, feels and dreams
d. what he/she does or does not do
e. what others say about him/her and how others react to him/her
