The first settlers ...
...were the Celts. Who could wade through the sea water or used simply crafted boats in their search for new land. We know very little about them. Nothing was written down; only their remains (bodies and artefacts) speak to us.

Yes, many Celtic, later Anglo-Saxon, tribes revolted against the Romans. Lots of fighting. One of the most famous Celtic leaders was a woman called Boudicca.
