What are phrasal verbs?
Phrasal Verb Formula:  a phrase that combines a verb with a preposition or adverb or both

The meaning of these combined words is different from the meaning of the same words seperately

Example: take off
I'll take off my shoes
I'll take Jessie to the park

Adverbs are words that modify a verb

Examples: the movie ended abruptly

Prepositions are words which link nouns, pronouns and phrases to other words in a sentence. Prepositions usually describe the position of something, the time when something happens and the way in which something is done.
Some examples Phrasal Verbs
A. Inseparable phrasal verbs
1. look for: 
He is looking for his keys >>>> zoeken
2. come across:
I came across some old photos in the drawer
B. Separable phrasal verbs 
1. make up:
Mary made up the story / Mary made the story up >>>> verzinnen
2. take off:
She took off her coat / She took her coat off >>>> uitdoen

Transitive vs. intransitive verbs
  • Transitive verbs: hebben een lijdend voorwerp nodig.
  • I need.... (information is missing) --> I need your help.
  • I take off... (information is missing) --> I take off my shoes.
  • Intransitive verbs: hebben geen lijdend voorwerp nodig.
  • I smiled. (no extra information can be added).
  • My car broke down --> no object is needed.
