Grammar: Quantifiers

much = veel

many = veel

When do we use much and when do we use many?

Look at the examples:

What do you think the rule is?

I don't have much money.

How many friends do you have?

He has got many books.

How much water do you drink each day?

De regel ( just this once in Dutch!)

Much gebruik je voor "uncountable" nouns = znw die geen meervoud hebben bv money

Many gebruik je voor "countable"nouns = znw die een meervoud hebben bv coins

The rule

Much is used for uncountable nouns : nouns that do not have a 

plural - money - water- air

Many is used for countable nouns - nouns that have a plural form such as coins - bottles - apples - tables- people

Communicative activity

1. Get into groups of three or four. Each group has a set of cards.
2. Each student takes a turn taking a card, asking the question (using much or many) to the student on their left.
3.  Then they ask the follow up questions for more information.
4. Students take cards and ask questions until the time or the cards run out.
