Unit 4, lesson 2 : definite article (the) or omission (X)

"the" definite article (=bepalend lidwoord)

Difference between use of Dutch "het" and English "the". 

For seasons, only use "the" if you specify which particular season you mean:

I love spring!                                  No "the" - general
I hated the spring of 2020.     Use "the" - specific

"the" definite article (=bepalend lidwoord)

This also goes for: meals and general terms. 

Life is beautiful.                                             No "the" - general term

Dinner is my favourite meal.                    No "the" - meal

I loved the dinner she cooked me.        Use "the" - specific.

The life he lived was beautiful.                Use "the" - specific. 

"the" definite article (=bepalend lidwoord)

For institutions like hospital, school and university: 

* Use "the" when you talk about the actual building. 

* Don't use "the" when you talk about the function of the building. 

I hate going to university.               No "the" - reference to function

The university building is ugly.    Use "the" - building. 

No article when talking about streets or squares

I went to Museum square today

The shop is in Beethoven street

Bij gebouwen gebruik je alleen 'the'

1. als het gaat om de functie van het gebouw
2. als het gaat om het gebouw zelf.

Bij namen van parken en meren gebruik je

1. geen 'the'
2. wel 'the'

Bij namen van bijvoorbeeld 'bergen' krijg je alleen 'the' bij:

1. de naam van een berg die in het meervoud staat
2. de naam van een berg die in het enkelvoud staat
